Home Remedies For Sore Throat

A sore throat can be very uncomfortable. The main symptom is pain and irritation in the throat, especially when you swallow. Sore throats may be caused by viral infections including the common cold, bacterial infections, tonsillitis, and even pain following tonsillectomies. A sore throat occurs as part of your body’s immune response to viral or bacterial infections. It feels like something is blocking your throat and when you try to look at your throat in the mirror it appears red. Here are some home remedies for sore throat :

1. Gargle With Salt Water

Gargling with warm salt water can help soothe a scratchy throat.The salt pulls the mucus out of your swollen, inflamed tissue and helps relieve the discomfort. Make a saltwater solution with a half-teaspoon of salt in a full glass of warm water. Gargle it to help reduce swelling and keep the throat clean.

2. Marshmallow Root

The marshmallow plant has been used to treat sore throats and other conditions since the Middle Ages. Marshmallow root contains a mucus-like substance that coats and soothes a sore throat. Simply add some of the dried root to a cup of boiling water to make tea.

3. Honey

Honey is a delicious sweetener that is often used in combination with other natural ingredients to soothe a sore throat. Honey may be especially effective when combined with warm water and apple cider vinegar or herbs. Honey mixed in tea or taken on its own is a common household remedy for a sore throat. Honey has some antibacterial properties and may help ease sore throat due to infection. There are also studies that show it may help ease a cough, which can contribute to sore throat pain.

4. Chamomile Tea

Chamomile is a daisy-like plant that has been used for medicinal purposes since ancient times. Chamomile tea is naturally soothing. Chamomile tea is believed to promote restful sleep, which is important for healing. Chamomile may help fight infection and reduce pain. It is used for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and astringent properties. It can also stimulate the immune system to help your body fight off the infection that caused your sore throat.

5. Peppermint

Peppermint contains menthol, which helps thin mucus and calm sore throats and coughs. Peppermint tea contains anti-inflammatory compounds and is extremely soothing to the throat. Peppermint also has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral properties, which helps healing. Peppermint tea is caffeine-free and its naturally sweet taste often requires no additional sweetener.

6. Garlic

Garlic has natural antibacterial properties. It contains allicin, which helps to fight off infections. When crushed, raw garlic releases a compound called allicin that has antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. The best way to use garlic for sore throats is simply to chew on a raw clove, or take a slice and suck on it for 15 minutes.

7. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has many natural antibacterial uses. Due to its acidic nature, it can be used to help break down mucus in the throat and stop bacteria from spreading. It may also loosen phlegm that may be irritating the throat. To help relieve throat pain, drink 1 cup of warm water mixed with 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and an optional tablespoon of honey.
