Home Remedies For Heavy Menstrual Bleeding

The length of menstruation varies from woman to woman and is affected by many things, including stress, body mass index, and hormones. An average period can last from two to seven days, although some women have longer periods. Some women experience prolonged irregular periods that come with heavy bleeding and pain. Having heavy periods can take up much of your time, energy and money because it requires you to change your pads or tampons every couple of hours. It’s also something that can leave you suffering from iron-deficiency anemia, which can cause symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath and heart palpitations. Below are home remedies and natural treatments for heavy menstrual bleeding :

1. Red Raspberry

Red raspberry has astringent properties that calm cramps during heavy periods. It also supports the reproductive system by strengthening the walls of the uterus. Beside this raspberry leaves are rich in magnesium, potassium, iron and vitamin C. To stop excessive bleeding, mix the raspberry powder in a cup of hot water and let it for 15 minutes. Drink the solution three times a day throughout the menstrual period.

2. Cinnamon

Cinnamon reduces insulin resistance in women. Cinnamon also works by inhibiting thromboxane A2 receptors. These receptors cause platelets to clot. From these receptors cinnamon does stops heavy menstrual bleeding. To stop heavy bleeding, grind cinnamon into a fine powder and then add in a cup of water. Boil the solution for about twenty minutes. Drink before going to bed.

3. Coriander Seeds

Coriander seeds have bioactive compounds that balance the female hormones. To stop heavy bleeding, boil crushed coriander seeds in one liter of water until half of the water is left. Once the solution cools down, add some honey or sugar to taste.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar is acidic but it is the only type of vinegar that alkalizes the body. Other than that, Apple Cider Vinegar balances the hormones. To overcome the heavy flow, mix one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and drink throughout the menstrual period.

5. Cold Compress

Using a cold compress leads to vasoconstriction, the tightening of blood vessels that helps in reducing pain in the lower abdomen and heavy menstrual flow.  Just wrap some ice cubes with a clean cotton cloth and place on your abdomen for 20 minutes.

6. Blackstrap Molasses

Blackstrap molasses has been used for many years to help women with fibroids.  Magnesium, iron and minerals in Blackstrap molasses assists in reducing menstrual bleeding by increasing the number of red blood cells to keep a check on the blood loss and reduce the pain.

7. Ginger Tea

Ginger helps to stop the production of prostaglandin hormone which is responsible for menstrual cramps. To make the tea, put some ginger powder in a cup of water and simmer for five minutes. Drink two times every day.

8. Have sex

Having an orgasm, either through intercourse or masturbation, can reduce cramping and menstrual flow. This is because orgasms generate uterine muscle contractions, which help to move menstrual blood from the uterus. These contractions help the uterus shed the blood faster.

9. Mustard Seeds

Mustard seeds have been praised for their unmatched healing abilities. They are rich in fatty acids which help to stop the bleeding naturally. Rich in omega-3 fatty acid, mustard seed powder when mixed with milk or water aides in regulating estrogen levels and keeping hormonal imbalance in check that regulates menstrual flow.

10. Tamarind

Tamarind prevents excessive bleeding by helping the blood to clot. Tamarind works best in paste form. The antioxidants found in tamarind reduces the cholesterol levels and treats heavy bleeding. Make a paste of tamarind, honey and water by mixing it in a blender and drink it up.
